ABSTRACT A large set of variables is assessed for progeny selection in a plant-breeding program and other agronomic fields. The meta-analysis of the coefficient of variation (CVe) produces information for researchers and breeders on the experimental quality of trials. This analysis can also be applied in the decision-making process of the experimental plan regarding the experimental design, the number of repetitions, and the treatments and plants/progenies to be measured. In this study, we evaluated the dataset distribution and the descriptive statistics of CVe through the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches, aiming to establish the credibility and confidence intervals. We submitted CVe data of ten wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) traits reported in 1,068 articles published to the Bayesian and Frequentist analyses. Sample data were analyzed via Gamma and normal models. We selected the model with the lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value, and then we tested three link functions. In the Bayesian analysis, uniform distributions were used as non-informative priors for the Gamma distribution parameters with three ranges of q~U (a,b,). Thus, the prior probability density function was given by: p θ = 1 β - α , θ ∈ α , β . The Bayesian and Frequentist approaches with the Gamma model presented similar results for CVe; however, the range Bayesian credible intervals was narrower than the Frequentist confidence intervals. Gamma distribution fitted the CVe data better than the normal distribution. The credible and confidence intervals of CVe were successfully applied to wheat traits and could be used as experimental accuracy measurements in other experiments.

RESUMO: O processo de desenvolvimento de uma nova cultivar de trigo requer tempo entre a obtenção da população base e a seleção da linhagem mais promissora. Estimar parâmetros genéticos com mais precisão nas primeiras gerações com vistas a antecipar a seleção significa avanços importantes para os programas de melhoramento de trigo. Assim, o presente estudo estima os parâmetros genéticos de populações F2 de trigo tropical e o ganho genético da seleção via abordagem Bayesiana. Para tanto, os autores avaliaram a produtividade de grãos por parcela de 34 populações F2 de trigo tropical. A abordagem Bayesiana proporcionou um ajuste adequado ao modelo, estimando parâmetros genéticos dentro do espaço paramétrico. A herdabilidade (h2) foi de 0,51. Dentre as selecionadas, 11 populações F2 obtiveram desempenho superior às cultivares controle, com ganho genético de seleção de 7,80%. As seguintes populações foram as mais promissoras: Tbio Sossego/CD 1303, CD 1303/Tbio Ponteiro, BRS 254/CD 1303, Tbio Duque/Tbio Aton e Tbio Aton/CD 1303. A inferência Bayesiana pode ser usada para melhorar significativamente programas de melhoramento de trigo tropical.

ABSTRACT: The development process of a new wheat cultivar requires time between obtaining the base population and selecting the most promising line. Estimating genetic parameters more accurately in early generations with a view to anticipating selection means important advances for wheat breeding programs. Thus, the present study estimated the genetic parameters of F2 populations of tropical wheat and the genetic gain from selection via the Bayesian approach. To this end, the authors assessed the grain yield per plot of 34 F2 populations of tropical wheat. The Bayesian approach provided an adequate fit to the model, estimating genetic parameters within the parametric space. Heritability (h2) was 0.51. Among those selected, 11 F2 populations performed better than the control cultivars, with genetic gain of 7.80%. The following populations were the most promising: TbioSossego/CD 1303, CD 1303/TbioPonteiro, BRS 254/CD 1303, Tbio Duque/Tbio Aton, and Tbio Aton/CD 1303. Bayesian inference can be used to significantly improve tropical wheat breeding programs.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly changed the everyday life of the population, especially of people in social distancing. Thus, using a qualitative methodology, we sought to analyze the changes in the everyday lives of Brazilians in social distancing and the possible contributions of occupational therapy in telehealth groups. The research was carried out in a virtual format using the technique of focus groups to collect the narratives. The meetings, which lasted approximately 90 min, occurred in the second half of 2020. The meetings were transcribed, analyzed, and categorized by the interpretive phenomenological method. Four categories were found, namely, changes in emotional states, changes in everyday life, political crossings and the pandemic, and from grouping to virtual grouping. Disruptions in everyday life were noticed, as well as the formation of a mutual help group. Remote assistance in occupational therapy contributed to health care emergencies as it allowed moments of reflection in the participants’ everyday lives.

Resumo A pandemia de COVID-19 alterou bruscamente o cotidiano da população, sobretudo o das pessoas em isolamento social. Dessa forma, através da metodologia qualitativa, buscou-se analisar as mudanças nos cotidianos de brasileiros em distanciamento físico e as possíveis contribuições da terapia ocupacional em teleatendimento grupal. A pesquisa foi realizada no formato virtual. Utilizou-se a técnica de grupos focais para a coleta das narrativas. Os encontros, com duração aproximada de 1 hora e 30 minutos, aconteceram no segundo semestre de 2020. Esses encontros foram transcritos, analisados e categorizados por meio do método fenomenológico interpretativo. Quatro categorias foram encontradas: alterações dos estados emocionais; cotidianos; atravessamentos políticos e pandemia; do agrupamento à grupalidade virtual. Foi possível perceber as rupturas nos cotidianos e a formação de um grupo de ajuda mútua. A atuação da terapia ocupacional em teleatendimento contribuiu para o cuidado em emergências de saúde, pois se aproximou e refletiu sobre o cotidiano dos participantes.

Abstract A peach breeding program started in 1963, at the Experiment Station of Pelotas, nowadays Embrapa Clima Temperado, whose primary aim was developing cultivars adapted to mild winter conditions. Its first priority was to obtain cultivars of canning type fruits, and over the years, the fresh market cultivars acquired equal importance. This article analyzes the data of 84 fresh market cultivars, obtained in Pelotas, from 1964 to 2017, focusing on the following parameters: time of ripening, fruit development period, average fruit mass, number of fruits per tree, productivity per plant and total soluble solids. First, the data were tabulated, divided into two periods (1964-1984 and 1985-2017), and the descriptive statistical analysis was performed, followed by an analysis via mixed models and estimates of genetic progress via meta-analysis. The main results revealed a reduced fruit development period of the fresh market peaches belonging to that program. It was also observed a significant spread of the time of ripening (end of September or beginning of October until January), with a slight tendency for earliness. Genetic gain was observed for yield corresponding to 1.17 and 2.25% per year, for 1964-1984 and 1985-2017, respectively.

Resumo Em 1963, começou na Estação Experimental de Pelotas, hoje Embrapa Clima Temperado, um programa de melhoramento de pessegueiro cujo objetivo fundamental era desenvolver cultivares adaptadas a condições de inverno ameno. Inicialmente, a prioridade era a obtenção de cultivares produtoras de frutos para enlatamento, mas, ao longo dos anos, cultivares para o mercado fresco adquiriram a mesma importância. Este artigo analisa dados de 84 cultivares, tipo mesa, desenvolvidos em Pelotas, de 1964 a 2017, focando nos seguintes parâmetros: época de maturação, período de desenvolvimento do fruto, massa média dos frutos, número de frutos por planta, produção por planta e conteúdo de sólidos solúveis das frutas. Inicialmente, os dados foram tabulados, divididos em dois períodos (1964-1984 e 1985-2017), sendo então realizada a análise estatística descritiva, seguida por uma análise de modelos mistos e estimativa do progresso genético via meta-análise. Os resultados mostraram uma redução no período de desenvolvimento dos frutos das cultivares tipo mesa, pertencentes a esse programa. Houve ainda uma ampliação do período de colheita (do fim de setembro ou início de outubro até janeiro), com uma leve tendência à maior precocidade. Verificou-se um ganho genético para produção por planta, correspondendo a 1.17 e 2.25% ao ano, para os períodos de 1964- 1984 e 1985-2017, respectivamente.

Abstract The peach breeding program of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), addressing the adaptation to mild winter conditions, is one of the largest in the world and maintains a germplasm collection of nearly 900 accessions. The objective was to estimate the genetic progress in fruit weight (FW) and fruit development period (FDP) resulting from the above program, by analyzing data records of 16 years (2000 - 2015) of 65 genotypes. Based on samples of ≥ 10 fruits, the mean annual FW (in g) and FDP (in number of days) from full flowering to harvest were determined. In the 16 years, the gain in FDP consisted of respective reductions of about -12.8, -3.3, -2.8 days for canning peach, fresh peach and nectarine. However, the genetic progress in fruit weight was 5.3, 1.4 and -17.9 g fruit-1 for canning peach, fresh peach and nectarine, respectively.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de híbridos de milho (Zea mays) intervarietais, a partir de cruzamentos topcross entre populações crioulas, além de confirmar se a dissimilaridade genética entre as populações é correlacionada à heterose dos híbridos intervarietais no campo. Nove híbridos topcross foram avaliados com seu testador 'BRS Planalto', e as seguintes populações crioulas foram utilizadas como genitores: Argentino Branco, Dente de Ouro, Amarelão, Criolão, Caiano Rajado, Branco Oito Carreiras, Branco Roxo Índio, Cateto Branco e Argentino Amarelo. O testador 'BRS Planalto' e os híbridos topcross Branco Oito Carreiras x 'BRS Planalto' e Criolão x 'BRS Planalto' apresentaram maior potencial per se quanto ao rendimento de grãos. O topcross Branco Oito Carreiras x 'BRS Planalto' apresentou melhor desempenho quanto a número de grãos por fileira, massa de grãos da espiga e diâmetro de espiga, enquanto o Criolão x 'BRS Planalto' apresentou melhor desempenho quanto a número de grãos por fileira e comprimento de espiga. As maiores estimativas de distância genética não implicaram, necessariamente, altos valores de heterose, e tiveram correlação apenas com o comprimento da espiga. Portanto, não é possível predizer os efeitos de alta heterose sobre o rendimento de grãos, com base na distância genética entre as populações envolvidas nos cruzamentos.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of intervarietal corn (Zea mays) hybrids with topcross crosses between landrace populations, and to confirm whether genetic dissimilarity between populations is correlated with the heterosis of the intervarietal hybrids in the field. Nine topcross hybrids were evaluated with their tester 'BRS Planalto', and the following landrace populations were used as parents: Argentino Branco, Dente de Ouro, Amarelão, Criolão, Caiano Rajado, Branco Oito Carreiras, Branco Roxo Índio, Cateto Branco, and Argentino Amarelo. The tester 'BRS Planalto' and the topcross hybrids Branco Oito Carreiras x 'BRS Planalto' and Criolão x 'BRS Planalto' showed higher per se potential for grain yield. The topcross hybrid Branco Oito Carreiras x 'BRS Planalto' showed a better performance for number of grains per row, grain weight, and ear diameter, whereas Criolão x 'BRS Planalto' displayed a better performance for the number of grains per row and ear length. Greater estimates of genetic distance did not necessarily result in greater heterosis values and were exclusively correlated with grain ear length. Therefore, it is not possible to predict the effects of high heterosis on grain yield, based on the genetic distance between the populations involved in the crosses.

RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivos: 1) comparar a utilização dos métodos alternativos fita de pesagem e peso metabólico em éguas gestantes e; 2) desenvolver um modelo matemático para estimar o peso de éguas gestantes, baseado em medidas corporais. Trinta e quatro éguas foram avaliadas quinzenalmente durante o terço médio e final da gestação. Foi realizada a pesagem em balança comercial; a mensuração com a fita de peso para equinos; o cálculo do peso metabólico; as medidas de perímetro torácico (Ptorac); a mensuração abdominal no décimo segundo espaço intercostal (12EI) e na décima oitava costela (18Cost). As observações foram divididas em três períodos gestacionais: Período de 5 a 7 meses, Período de 7 a 9 meses e Período de 9 a 11 meses. As éguas demonstraram incremento no peso na balança e na mensuração abdominal no 12EI e 18Cost no terço final da gestação. A utilização da fita de pesagem e o cálculo de peso metabólico subestimaram o peso na balança em éguas gestantes. O modelo de regressão utilizando o Ptorac, 12EI e 18Cost apresentou alta correção (r2=0,87; P<0,001) com o peso na balança. Observou-se que os métodos alternativos de pesagem, usualmente utilizados, não apresentaram a mesma eficiência em éguas prenhes. Pode-se concluir que o modelo de regressão Y=-540,143+(Ptorac X 3,068) + (12EI X 1,278) + (18Cost X 0,944) pode ser utilizado para mensurar o peso em éguas gestantes a partir do 5º mês de gestação.

ABSTRACT: The aims of this study were: 1) to compare the tape weight and associated weight-estimation formula to evaluate weight gain in pregnant mares, and 2) to develop a mathematical model to estimate the weight of pregnant mares using body measurements. Thirty-four criollo-type mares were evaluated every two weeks during the middle and late pregnancy. The mares were weighed on a livestock scale, and we estimated body weight using tape weights and an associated body-weight estimation formula. Also, heart-girth circumference (heartgirth) and abdominal circumference were measured; the latter at the 12th intercostal space (12th ICS) and 18th rib (18th Rib), to use in a mathematical model to estimate the weight of pregnant mares. Observations were divided into three periods of pregnancy: 5th to 7 h month, 7th to 9 h month, and 9th to 11th month. Mares in late pregnancy showed an increase in actual weight and an increase in 12th ICS and 18th Rib measurements. Tape weight and body-weight estimation formula underestimated the weight of pregnant mares. However, the regression model using heart-girth circumference, 12th ICS, and 18th Rib measurements showed high correlation (r2 = 0.87, P<0.001) with actual weight. Finally, the alternative methods usually used in horses are not accurate to estimate body weight in pregnant mares. In conclusion, the regression model Y=-540.143 + (heartgirth x 3.068) + (12th ICS x 1.278) + (18th Rib x 0.944) can be used to estimate body weight in pregnant mares from the 5th to 11th months of pregnancy.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética, entre e dentro de progênies de dendezeiro tipo dura, de origem Deli. A caracterização genética foi feita com uso de marcadores microssatélites em 24 progênies usadas na produção comercial de sementes, sendo 22 provenientes de autofecundação e duas de cruzamentos entre irmãos completos. Foi realizada análise de variância molecular entre e dentro das progênies, com posterior construção de um dendrograma. Observou-se baixa variabilidade genética nas progênies, com média de 1,32 alelos por loco e variância genética total igual a 0,3241. A maior parte da variação ocorreu entre progênies. A menor variabilidade genética dentro das progênies pode ser explorada nos cruzamentos com progênies endogâmicas de outras origens, o que facilitaria o alcance de heterose para o desenvolvimento de novas variedades.

The objective of this work was to assess the genetic diversity between and within progenies of dura type oil palm from Deli. Genetic characterization was performed with microsatellite markers on 24 oil palm progenies used in commercial seed production, of which 22 originated from self-fertilization and two from cross-fertilization between full siblings. Molecular analysis of variance was carried out among and within progenies, and a dendrogram was constructed. Low genetic variability was observed within progenies, with an average of 1.32 alleles per locus and total variance of 0.3241. Most of the variation was found between progenies. The lower genetic variability within progenies can be explored in crossings with endogamic progenies from other origins, which would facilitate heterosis in order to develop new varieties.

O trabalho objetivou caracterizar a diversidade genética de populações de buriti por meio de marcadores AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism). A análise foi realizada em quatro populações utilizadas por comunidades tradicionais do estado do Amazonas (Bom Jesus do Anamã, Lauro Sodré, Santa Luzia do Buiçuzinho e Esperança II). Foram amostrados aleatoriamente 30 indivíduos em cada população. Para a obtenção dos marcadores foram utilizadas quatro combinações de primers. Foi estimada a porcentagem de locos polimórficos, realizada análise de variância molecular entre e dentro de populações e construído dendograma. Os primers revelaram 339 locos polimórficos variando de 81,1 % a 91,1 % entre as populações. A Análise molecular de variância atribuiu 77,18 % de variação dentro e 22,82 % entre as populações. O dendograma revelou a formação de dois grupos, mostrando que as populações de Bom Jesus do Anamã e Lauro Sodré são as mais semelhantes geneticamente e que as distâncias genéticas não estão correlacionadas com a distância geográfica.

This study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of buriti populations by AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) markers. The analysis was performed in four populations used by traditional communities in the state of Amazonia (Bom Jesus do Anamã, Lauro Sodré, Santa Luzia do Buiçuzinho, and Esperança II). From each population 30 plants were randomly selected. To obtain the markers four primer combinations were used. The percentage of polymorphic loci was estimated, the molecular variance among and within populations analyzed and a dendrogram constructed. The primers detected 339 polymorphic loci ranging from 81.1 % to 91.1 % among populations. Analysis of molecular variance attributed 77.18 % to variation within and 22.8 % to variation between populations. The dendrogram indicated the formation of two groups, showing that the populations of Bom Jesus do Anamã and Lauro Sodré are genetically most similar and thet the genetic and geographical distances are not correlated.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do condicionamento osmótico no desempenho de sementes de pimenta submetidas à deterioração controlada. Para tanto, sementes de pimenta 'Amarela Comprida' (Capsicum annuum L.), com teor de água ajustado para 24%, foram submetidas à deterioração controlada em banho-maria a 45ºC por 0, 24, 48 e 72 horas. Em seguida, foram osmocondicionadas em solução de PEG 6000 a -1,1 MPa, por 0, 6 e 8 dias. Avaliaram-se a germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, germinação a baixa temperatura, velocidade de germinação a 15ºC e a 25°C, massa seca de plântulas e comprimento de raiz primária. Verificou-se que o condicionamento osmótico foi benéfico à germinação das sementes de pimenta deterioradas por 48 e 72 horas, não prejudicando a germinação das sementes de alta qualidade fisiológica e ainda contribuiu para melhorar o vigor tanto das sementes não deterioradas quanto das deterioradas por 48 e 72 horas, constituindo-se em procedimento promissor para elevar a qualidade fisiológica das mesmas.

The osmotic conditioning technique has been considered promising for improving the physiological potential of seeds of various species. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of osmotic conditioning on the performance of pepper seeds subjected to controlled deterioration. Thus, seeds of 'Long Yellow pepper' (Capsicum annuum L.), with water content adjusted to 24%, were subjected to controlled deterioration in water bath at 45 °C for 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours. After that, they were osmotic conditioning in PEG 6000 to -1.1 MPa during 0, 6 and 8 days. The germination, first count of germination, germination at low temperature, speed of germination at 15 º C and 25 °C, dry weight of seedlings and length of primary root were evaluated. It was found that the osmotic conditioning was beneficial to the germination of pepper seeds deteriorated by 48 and 72 hours, not affecting the germination of seeds of high physiological quality. It also helped to improve the strength of both the seeds that had not been damaged and those deteriorated by 48 and 72 hours, being a promising technique to increase their physiological quality.

Características oligogênicas de distribuição discreta e expressão governada por poucos genes de maior efeito têm se mostrado importantes na condução dos programas de melhoramento, com destaque para a resposta de resistência das plantas às doenças. Métodos tradicionais de detecção de QTL's, que pressupõem normalidade e herança governada por múltiplos fatores, não deveriam ser utilizados para mapeamento dessas características de distribuição discreta e interação epistática predominante. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar os resultados de um método para mapeamento e detecção de locos controladores da expressão de características oligogênicas, OTL's (Oligogenic Trait Loci). Esse método, definido como MMCO (Método de Mapeamento de Características Oligogênicas), utiliza funções de verossimilhança para obtenção de estimativas de ligação fatorial entre locos marcadores e locos controladores de características oligogênicas. Os resultados indicam que o método foi adequado para detecção de OTL's em populações F2 relativamente pequenas, compostas por 200 indivíduos, e que a determinação a priori do padrão de herança é condição necessária para a utilização dessa estratégia, que se diferencia por atender as pressuposições de análise, não necessitar de informação prévia de ordenamento entre as marcas e por permitir a obtenção de estimativas a partir da informação contida em todas as classes genotípicas.

Oligogenic traits are distinguished by their heritage ruled by higher effect genes and by their importance for cultivated plants, with emphasis to the plant disease resistance inheritance. The qualitative nature and epistatic interaction of these traits results in a heritage pattern that should not be interpreted through traditional QTL detection strategies. The objective of this work was to propose a method for Oligogenic Traits Loci (OTL) detection. This method, defined as Oligogenic Trait Mapping Method (OTMM) uses maximum likehood probability functions to obtain adjusted "r" estimates that express the distance among the molecular markers and the OTL loci. The results show that the method was adequate for OTL detection even in relatively small F2 populations. The prior definition of the oligogenic heritage pattern is one the main requirements of this method that focus in the attainment of the analysis presumptions without previous markers order information.

São poucos os softwares disponíveis para a análise de parentesco e, até a presente data, nenhum pode realizar a análise de parentesco para organismos poliplóides, com número par (2k) de cromossomos. Implementou-se junto ao programa R uma rotina capaz de executar a análise de parentesco para qualquer nível 2k de ploidia, número de indivíduos (ou populações) e número de gerações envolvidas na árvore genealógica. A função principal, calc.rxy() calcula o coeficiente de endogamia (F X) de cada indivíduo; coeficientes de parentesco (rXY) entre dois indivíduos quaisquer; e coeficiente de parentesco médio, variância, mínimo e máximo, para cada indivíduo. Ela pode mostrar a matriz completa de parentesco ou uma submatriz pré-definida de indivíduos selecionados. Adicionalmente, foram incluidas funções que servem para identificar erros de redundância dos dados originais (checar.nomes()) e para identificar os pares de indivíduos com rXY superior a certo limite especificado pelo pesquisador (corte.rxy()). Essas funções podem ser usadas na análise de pedigrees com um número elevado de indivíduos e poderão ser utilizadas pela comunidade científica livremente, sem restrições à plataforma operacional utilizada. Destaca-se a vantagem em se poder trabalhar com qualquer nível 2k de ploidia, mesmo quando existe a possibilidade de certo indivíduo ser oriundo de autofecundação, aspecto comum em várias espécies vegetais.

There are few softwares available to analyze relatedness among individuals and, to date, none can perform this analysis for polyploid organisms, with even number (2k) of chromosomes. This work implements within package able to execute an analysis of relatedness for any 2k-ploidy level, number of individuals (or populations) and number of generations in the pedigree. The main function, calc.rxy(), calculates the inbreeding coefficient (F X) of each individual; coancestry coefficients (rXY) between any two individuals; and average, variance, minimum and maximum of coancestry coefficient for each selected individual. A complete matrix of coancestry or any sub-matrix for selected individuals can be output. In addition, functions are included to identify reduntant information in the original data set (checar.nomes()) and to identify pairs of individuals with rXY higher than an upper bound specified by the researcher (corte.rxy()). These functions can be used to analyze a pedigree with a large number of individuals and can be implemented by the scientific community freely, regardless of the platform in use. The advantage of allowing to work with any 2k-ploidy level is highlighted, even when some individual is originated from selfing, a common scenario for many plant species.

Estimaram-se as correlações fenotípicas, genotípicas e ambientais entre o número de cachos por planta e a produção anual e suas combinações em dendê (Elaeis guineensis). Os coeficientes de repetibilidade e de determinação também foram estimados, com o objetivo de indicar o período mínimo de colheita necessário para se acessar o potencial genotípico das progênies avaliadas. A correlação genotípica entre o número de cachos e a produção foi negativa, indicando que, se forem selecionados os genótipos com maior produção, o número de cachos deverá diminuir. A correlação genotípica geralmente apresentou sinal oposto do que precedia correlação ambiental, evidenciando que as causas genéticas e ambientais influenciam o número de cachos e a produção por meio de mecanismos fisiológicos distintos. Com base no método de componentes principais aplicado à matriz de correlação, o período mínimo de colheitas foi de quatro anos, com confiabilidade de 87,6% e coeficiente de repetibilidade de 0,64.

The phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations between the number of palm fruit bunches and the annual yield and their combinations in African palm were estimated. There were also estimated the coefficients of repeatability and determination, with the objective of indicating the lowest number of successive harvests required to exploit the genotypic potential of the evaluated progenies. The genotypic correlation between the number of bunches per plant and the yield was negative, indicating that when genotypes with a higher yield are selected the number of bunches decreases. In general, the signal of the genotypic correlation differed was opposite to the one from the environmental correlation, evidencing that genetic and environmental factors influence the number of bunches and yield through different physiological mechanisms. Based on the method of principal components applied to the correlation matrix, at least four years of evaluation seem to be necessary, values coefficients of reliability and repeatability were 87.6% e 0.64, respectively.

Visando quantificar os efeitos diretos e indiretos de componentes de produção sobre as variáveis tonelada de cana por hectare (TCH) e massa média de colmos (MMC) foram realizadas análises de trilha fenotípicas e genotípicas. Dezessete famílias híbridas foram avaliadas no delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, no Centro de Pesquisa e Melhoramento da Cana-de-Açúcar (CECA), da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, com o plantio realizado em janeiro de 2000. Foram definidas como componentes de produção as variáveis: altura de colmos (AC), diâmetro de colmos (DC) e número de colmos (NC). As variáveis MMC e NC podem ser utilizadas na seleção indireta de famílias mais produtivas, uma vez que tiveram efeitos diretos positivos e elevados sobre TCH. Apesar de AC e DC estarem altamente correlacionadas com MMC, apenas DC mostrou elevado efeito genético direto sobre MMC, sendo uma variável importante a ser considerada na seleção indireta de famílias com maior massa média de colmos.

Phenotypic and genetic path analyses were carried out in order to quantify direct and indirect effects of production components on the variable ton of stalks per hectare (TSH) and mean stalk weight (MSW). Seventeen hybrid families were evaluated on a randomized complete block design with four replicates, at the Centro de Pesquisa e Melhoramento da Cana-de-Açúcar - CECA of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais State. Planting was carried out in January 2000. The following variables were defined as production components: stalk height (SH), stalk diameter (SD) and stalk number (SN). The results indicated that the variables MSW and SN can be used for indirect selection of high yielding families, since they showed positive and high direct effects on TSH. Despite SH and SD showed high correlation with MSW, only SD showed high direct genetic effect on MSW, demonstrating the importance of this variable for indirect selection of families with higher mean stalk weight.
